Concerns Raised Over Possible Changes to Essex Library Services

Proposed changes to library funding in Essex could affect services used by residents in Tiptree.

Plans being considered by Essex County Council include reducing the county’s library book fund by £100,000 and introducing a charge for adults who reserve books.

The proposals form part of wider budget discussions and are due to be voted on at a full council meeting.

Campaign group Save Our Libraries Essex has criticised the plans, describing them as a major threat to library services.

The council, however, said the reduction represents around six per cent of the overall book budget and that library users would still have access to a wide range of books and digital resources.

Libraries across Essex, including the one serving Tiptree residents, are part of the county-wide service run by the council.

Supporters of local libraries say they play an important role in communities by providing access to books, study space and activities for children and families.

The final decision on the proposed changes will be made following the council’s budget vote.
