What is this weather?
One minute it’s sunshine.
Actual, genuine, “maybe I’ll sit outside” sunshine.
The next?
Freezing.
“Is it going to be cold enough in the morning to see frost on the car?”
Regret.
Across Tiptree and the wider Essex area, there’s a very specific kind of person emerging right now.
The impatient gardener.
You’ve seen them.
You might be them.
Standing in the garden, squinting slightly, convincing themselves that this is it now.
Spring has arrived.
It’s time.
Except… it’s not quite that simple.
Because yes — technically, this is the time to start.
If you’re organised.
If you’ve got the space.
If you’re the kind of person who can peacefully sow seeds indoors and keep them alive.
Which, for many people… is absolutely happening right now.
Seed trays lined up neatly.
Windowsills doing the most.
Greenhouses quietly thriving.
Everything labelled.
Everything under control.
And then there’s the rest of us.
Because in my house, sowing seeds indoors doesn’t feel like a calm, wholesome activity.
It feels like setting up a tiny, fragile obstacle course…
for two small children who absolutely will not respect it.
Plant pots?
Targets.
Seed trays?
Opportunities.
Carefully nurtured seedlings?
Gone.
So while the advice is technically “start indoors”…
The reality is that not everyone has a home environment that supports that without… significant casualties.
Which leaves us in this weird middle ground.
It looks like spring.
It feels like it should be time.
But unless you’re set up for it, or willing to take the risk, it can feel a bit… pointless.
I haven’t even made the trip to Perrywood Garden Centre yet.
Not because I don’t want to.
But because it feels like walking in there right now would be dangerous.
I’ll convince myself it’s time.
I’ll buy things.
I’ll get overly optimistic.
And then I’ll be outside, in a coat, questioning every life decision while trying to plant something in cold soil…
while also stopping someone from launching a plant pot across the garden.
And then, of course, there’s the school projects.
Because it’s not just our unrealistic gardening ambitions anymore.
It’s official.
My son has come home with a mission:
Plant a sunflower seed.
Grow it.
Bring it back.
There’s a prize for the biggest.
No pressure.
So now, not only am I navigating unpredictable British weather…
I’m apparently in a competitive gardening situation.
Against other parents.
Some of whom I suspect already have spreadsheets.
The truth is, April is a bit of a tease.
You can start.
You probably should start.
But also… not everything is ready yet.
And not everyone’s set up for it.
So what do we do?
Do we:
- Wait it out like sensible people
- Or risk it all on a slightly sunny afternoon
Because let’s be honest…
At least one of us is going to plant something this weekend anyway.
🍓 Strawberry Reporter says:
“Somewhere in Tiptree, a perfectly organised seed tray is thriving…
and somewhere else, one has just been kicked over by a toddler.”
🌦️ Raspberry Met says:
“Temperatures may be rising during the day, but overnight lows are still cold enough for frost. If you’re planting outdoors, it’s worth holding off on anything delicate for now… or at least keeping a close eye on the forecast.”
