Waste and Recycling Collections Changing Across Colchester Area From June

Households across the Colchester district, including residents in Tiptree, will see changes to their recycling and waste collections from 1 June 2026.

The new system is being introduced by Colchester City Council as part of a wider update to recycling services.

Under the changes, many households will move to a wheeled-bin system for both recycling and non-recyclable waste.

What the New System Includes

The updated service will typically include:

A 180-litre black bin for non-recyclable waste
A 240-litre green bin for mixed recycling, including plastics, tins, paper and card
A separate box for glass recycling
A food waste caddy for weekly collections

Food waste will continue to be collected weekly, while recycling and non-recyclable waste will be collected on alternating weeks.

Collection Days Changing

From June, every household will receive a new collection calendar, and many properties will see their collection day change.

Residents are being advised to check their new calendar when it becomes available online later in May.

Why the Changes Are Happening

The council says the changes are designed to simplify recycling, reduce ripped rubbish bags on streets and improve efficiency as the district continues to grow.

The new system will also help the council meet national recycling rules under the government’s Simpler Recycling programme.

Gradual Rollout

Some areas will begin using the new wheeled bins from June as part of an early rollout phase, with the full rollout expected to be completed by March 2027.

Residents will receive instructions and information before any changes take effect.
