A12 Night Closures Begin Near Tiptree

Two weeks of overnight roadworks set to test late-night patience

Drivers around Tiptree, Witham and Colchester are being warned to expect disruption as overnight closures come into force along the A12.

National Highways has begun a series of road surface repairs between junctions 19 and 25, running from Monday 20 April through to the morning of Saturday 2 May 2026.

The works are scheduled weeknights only, between 9pm and 5am, which is either reassuring or deeply inconvenient depending on your relationship with sleep.

What’s actually closing, and when

The closures are being carried out in two phases:

  • 20 to 25 April: A12 southbound closed between junctions 25 (Marks Tey) and 23
  • 27 April to 2 May: A12 northbound closed between junctions 19 (Boreham) and 24

So while the headline says “junctions 19 to 25”, the reality depends very much on which direction you are heading and how unlucky your timing is.

Diversions (brace yourself)

Diversion routes will send drivers along a loop via:

  • A120
  • Marks Farm Roundabout
  • Galleys Corner
  • Great Notley Roundabout
  • A131
  • Back to the A12 at Boreham

Or the same route in reverse, depending on direction.

It is, in essence, the scenic route. Whether you wanted it or not.

What drivers should know

  • Closures are overnight only
  • No weekend works currently planned
  • All timings are weather dependent
  • Routes may change at short notice

Why it’s happening

The work is part of essential resurfacing aimed at improving road safety and long-term driving conditions.

Which is helpful in the long run, even if it does mean a slightly longer journey home in the short term.

🍓 Strawberry Reporter says:
Nothing bonds a community quite like collectively realising your “quick 10 minute drive” now includes a guided tour of Essex.
